Everything you need to know about renting a property on the French Riviera.

The French Riviera is renowned worldwide for its sunshine and blue skies, incredible vistas, luxury boutiques, excellent golf courses, and not to mention the outstanding cuisine.

After Paris, the Côte d’Azur is the second most popular tourist destination in France, attracting an excess of 11 million tourists a year, and for many good reasons. In the early 1900s, F. Scott Fitzgerald immortalised the Côte d’Azur in his later books and Coco Chanel made tanning fashionable - both were part of the early 20th century celebrity crowd who put the Côte d’Azur on the map.

Today, the French Riviera has been rediscovered as the ultimate luxury holiday destination. Boasting exceptional transport links and some of the world’s most sought-after addresses, not to mention a glittering social calendar, the French Riviera attracts visitors and buyers from all over the world.

If you are looking to start your French Riviera adventure, experience the true Riviera lifestyle and live like a local by renting a property. Rental properties offer an experience that often cannot be matched by tradition hotel stays.

So, what are the key things to remember when renting a property on the French Riviera?

• Rental properties on the Riviera that are available for holidays and short term lets are known locally as 'locations saisonnières'. This term translates into English as 'seasonal rentals' and you will find properties advertised under these terms, in English and French, or under 'locations courte durée'.

• Many top rental properties have a minimum rental period, especially in key locations where there is a high demand, such as Saint-Tropez and St-Jean-Cap- Ferrat.

• Upon a decision to rent, you will be issued with a contract, and due to French Law this will be in French, which holds precedent. However, many agents offer a bilingual version.

• A deposit will need to be paid in advance. This varies according to the price of property, but you can expect to pay about 25%.

• Some villas offer additional services such as a chef, cleaner or driver. Make sure you are clear as to what is included in your rental and the costs incurred for any additional services required, such as catering.

• Don’t be afraid to look at alternative locations. Inland areas are often overlooked in favour of sea views, however, locations such as Valbonne, Grasse, St Paul de Vence, Mougins, Ramatuelle and La Croix Valmer are all well-known for good reasons.

• Seasonal rentals are not limited to the summer season; it's never too early to think ahead to this year's ski season, or even plan a Christmas in Saint-Tropez.

• Last but not least, make sure you research local events and festivals that are taking place while you are staying in the area. There is a lot going on throughout the high season, from the Bravades de Saint-Tropez in May, the Fête de la Musique, the exceptional firework displays on the coastline, the celebration of perfume in Grasse or the historic Les Voiles de St Tropez.
